Celebrating Diversity and Excellence at the Black Scottish Awards 2024: A DWAD Pro LTD Reflection

As we pulled up to the Radisson Blu Glasgow, excitement filled the air. My husband, Babatunde Adetutu, had been nominated as a finalist in the prestigious Professional Rising Star category, and the evening was poised to celebrate not just his achievements, but the accomplishments of many outstanding professionals across the Scottish Black community and their allies. The Black Professional Scotland Awards, organized by the visionary Enoch Adeyemi, was a night dedicated to excellence, diversity, and the power of hard work values we cherish deeply at DWAD Pro LTD. A Warm Welcome with Cultural Roots Upon entering the lobby, we searched for our table number displayed on the screen, a subtle detail that added to the event’s well-organized atmosphere. As we made our way into the grand event hall, we were greeted by the Yoruba eulogy “Ise ni Ogun Ise,” meaning “Hard work is the antidote to poverty.” Hearing these words, I was immediately reminded of my cultural heritage. The opening speech by Enoch Adeyemi beautifully integrated this message, translating it into English for the diverse audience. It set the tone for the evening a celebration of identity, resilience, and global unity. Our Table: A Microcosm of Diversity and Professionalism We were seated at a table brimming with energy and diversity, surrounded by an amazing group of individuals from various cultural backgrounds including Scottish, Nigerian, and Mexican and representing a wide array of professions, including entrepreneurs, member of the police force, and executives from different industries. It was a true testament to the event’s focus on diversity, which aligns perfectly with one of DWAD Pro LTD’s core pillars. This wasn’t just an evening of celebration; it was also a powerful networking opportunity. The joyful atmosphere at our table was palpable. People were eager to connect, share their stories, and celebrate each other’s successes. Cultural Vibrance Meets Elegance The evening was filled with cultural activities that brought the room to life. Traditional dances and music bridged cultural divides, uniting everyone in the room through the universal language of art. The food was a delicious three-course continental meal which was another nod to the diverse audience, ensuring that there was something familiar for everyone. The MCs for the evening, Tosin Ogunlesi and Asabea Owusu, carried out their roles with grace and professionalism. Their ability to seamlessly navigate the evening while representing different cultural backgrounds added an extra layer of inclusiveness to the event. Celebrating Workmanship Excellence As the awards ceremony progressed, it became clear that this night wasn’t just about recognizing individual achievements but celebrating the collective excellence of the Black community and its Allies. The categories were designed to highlight those who have excelled in their respective fields, and our table was particularly special, with four nominees seated with us. Out of these four, three emerged as winners, including my Husband, Babatunde, who won in his category of Professional Rising Star. The pride I felt in that moment was indescribable, while it wasn’t just his victory but a triumph for all of us who believe in the power of perseverance and community. Nigerian Owanbe Vibes in Scotland No celebration is complete without capturing the memories, and the event offered a taste of Nigeria’s Owanbe vibe with the 360-degree rotating camera that allowed us to capture our most elegant moves and poses. The backdrop, showcasing all the event’s sponsors, provided a great spot for photos, and the branded photo booth gave everyone the chance to take professional pictures with their awards. It was an evening of glamour and joy, with a perfect balance of elegance and fun. A Night of Connection and Growth After the awards, the networking session allowed guests to exchange ideas, share views, and learn from one another. It was an invaluable opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations that will undoubtedly spark new partnerships and collaborations in the future. The night ended with live music and dancing, allowing everyone to let loose and celebrate not just the awards but the strength and unity of a community that continues to push boundaries and excel. The band played on, and the dance floor filled with vibrant energy, ensuring that the evening ended on a high note. DWAD Pro LTD: Diversity, Workmanship, Accomplishments, and Dialogue The Black Professional Scotland Awards was an event that perfectly embodied DWAD Pro LTD’s values. The celebration of diversity was evident in the range of backgrounds represented. The recognition of workmanship accomplishments was showcased through the award categories, celebrating the professional achievements of the Black community and their allies. And finally, the event fostered dialogue, providing space for people to connect, share, and learn from each other. At DWAD Pro LTD, we believe in the power of coming together across cultures to create something bigger than ourselves. This event was a shining example of how diversity and excellence can be celebrated on one stage, and we are proud to have been part of such an inspiring evening. We look forward to continuing to create spaces where diversity thrives, accomplishments are recognized, and meaningful dialogue is fostered both within Scotland and beyond. This experience has left a lasting impression, not just on me but on all who attended. It was a night that will be remembered, not just for the awards and accolades, but for the community it celebrated. And as DWAD Pro LTD continues to grow, we remain committed to these values Diversity, Workmanship Accomplishments, and Dialogue while looking forward to future events that inspire, connect, and celebrate excellence. Facebook is a remarkable marketing platform that offers sophisticated audience targeting options to help businesses reach their ideal customers. Here are the ways you can target audiences when creating a Facebook advertisement. 1. Demographic Targeting  Advertisers can target users based on age, gender, location, language, education, and job title. For example, a luxury watch brand may target males aged 30-50 in urban areas as the target audience can be found in those areas. 2. Interest & Behavior Targeting Facebook analyzes user activity so brands can target based on interests (e.g., fitness, travel) and behaviors (e.g., frequent online shoppers). Interest-based ads have a  higher engagement rate than one that isn’t interest based.   3. Custom Audiences (Retargeting) Businesses can upload customer lists (emails, phone numbers) or track website visitors via Facebook Pixel for retargeting. Retargeting ads keep brands top-of-mind, boosting conversions by up to 150% and brand recall by 57%.(Saini & Dudkiewicz, 2025).   4. Lookalike Audiences Facebook identifies users with similar traits to a brand’s existing customers. A study found lookalike audiences improve advert performance by 2-3x compared to broad targeting (Patel, 2024).   5. Geographic & Device Targeting   Adverts can be localized to specific cities or countries. Additionally, businesses can also target users by device (iOS/Android), a feature which further narrows the marketing audience.   References (Accessed on April 10, 2025) Explain the key elements that make up a great Facebook advertisement. An effective Facebook advert combines compelling visuals, persuasive copy, and strategic targeting to drive engagement and conversions. Here are some important elements that make up a good Facebook advertisement. 1. Eye-Catching Visuals  High-quality images or videos will always grab attention. Studies show video ads generate 12% more engagement than static images (Meta, 2024). An example of this would be a travel agency using vibrant destination videos to entice viewers. 2. Clear Value Proposition   The advert copy should immediately communicate benefits of the product or service. Adverts with a strong value proposition see 2x higher click-through rates (HubSpot, 2023). For instance: Get 50% off your first order—limited time! 3. Strong Call-to-Action (CTA)  Call to Actions (CTAs) guide user behavior and highlight what action you would want the customer to take on that advert. It could be “Shop Now” or “Sign Up”. CTAs can boost conversion rates of adverts by 30% (Neil Patel, 2024). 4. Audience Targeting Precise targeting ensures relevance. Custom and lookalike audiences can also improve returns on investment of advert spend.   5. Mobile Optimization With 98% of users accessing Facebook via mobile, vertical videos (9:16) and concise text

Social Media Advertising: A Vital Tool in Digital Marketing

Social media advertising plays a critical role in supporting an organisation’s overall digital marketing strategy. It allows brands to engage with audiences in real-time, build awareness, and drive measurable results across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, and TikTok. According to Statista (2024), global spending on social media advertising reached USD 234 billion, reflecting its growing impact. Unlike traditional advertising, social platforms provide advanced targeting features, enabling businesses to reach users based on location, interests, demographics, and online behavior. This targeted approach increases the return on investment (ROI) and reduces advertising waste. A major advantage that digital marketing has over traditional marketing.  A key benefit of social media advertising is its role in brand awareness and visibility. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow for visually engaging content, helping brands connect with younger demographics. For instance, Nike’s user-generated content campaigns on Instagram have significantly boosted engagement and follower growth, reinforcing brand loyalty (Velasquez, 2024). Additionally, social media ads contribute to lead generation and sales conversions. Social media platforms like Facebook offer lead forms directly in the adverts, which streamlines user experience and reduces drop-offs. HubSpot (2023) said that companies using Facebook ads saw a 77% increase in quality leads within six months.  Another strategic advantage is the ability to measure and optimize. Businesses can track impressions, click-through rates, and conversions in real time, which allows continuous improvement. Tools like Meta Ads Manager and Google Analytics assist in evaluating performance and refining campaigns based on audience behavior and also for retargeting. An advantage over traditional marketing strategies. Moreover, social media supports other digital marketing elements such as content marketing, influencer collaborations, and search engine optimization (SEO). For example, content shared across social platforms can increase web traffic and improve domain authority over time (Waye, 2023). To conclude, social media advertising is not just a promotional channel—it’s a strategic component of an integrated digital marketing approach. It supports brand building, customer acquisition, and real-time engagement, making it indispensable for modern marketing efforts and the beauty of it is that it caters to all budgets. Exploring the Healing Power of Music for Mental Health: A Spotlight on the Global South Arts & Health Week

As we celebrate Black History Month, we’re reminded of the powerful contributions of Black creatives in shaping arts and health an intersection where expression, culture, and well-being converge. This year, the University of Aberdeen presents a special event during the Global South Arts & Health Week, focused on “Music for Mental Health in Black Communities.” Set to take place at the prestigious Sir Duncan Rice Library, the session promises an inspiring exploration of music’s impact on mental health, especially within Black communities. The Healing Power of Music: An Ancient Remedy for Modern Minds The idea that music influences mental health is far from new. For centuries, music has been a source of comfort, healing, and emotional expression across cultures and communities. In Black communities especially, music has historically been a form of resistance, resilience, and recovery. It’s been used to tell stories, foster connections, and create safe spaces for expression. In therapeutic contexts, the benefits of music are even more pronounced research increasingly shows that music can reduce stress, alleviate depression, and foster a sense of community and belonging. At the heart of this event is the belief that music isn’t just an art form but a bridge to better mental health, a theory inspired by Dr. Olushola Ajinde’s mentor, a notable advocate for integrating music and arts into mental health practices. For this mentor, who has used these methods successfully with patients over the years, music is more than entertainment, it’s a powerful tool for mental and emotional healing. Dr. Olushola Ajinde continues this legacy, bringing the concept to the forefront for this upcoming event. A Celebration of Black Creative Legacy and Wellness As part of Black History Month, this event also acknowledges the invaluable contributions of Black artists and healers in shaping the world of arts and health. The influence of African, Caribbean, and Afro-diasporic musical traditions, from jazz and blues to reggae and hip-hop, has permeated global culture and wellness practices. This event shines a light on the cultural heritage of Black creatives, recognizing the ways they’ve used music as a vehicle for healing, protest, joy, and mental fortitude. Event Details This celebration of music’s therapeutic power is set for: Esteemed speakers will share insights, including Dr. Olushola Ajinde, Ph.D., who brings a wealth of knowledge in mental health and its intersections with culture; Glory Elofuke; Loliya Akobo, Kagher, PhD; Kunle Adewale; and Ollie Folayan, MBE (PhD CEng FIChemE). Exploring the Science and Tradition of Music Therapy For many, music’s effects on the brain can be transformative. Studies show that listening to music can trigger the release of dopamine, a “feel-good” neurotransmitter, leading to improved mood and reduced anxiety. Music therapy, a formalized practice, utilizes these effects to help patients manage stress, recover from trauma, and improve cognitive functioning. For Black communities, music therapy can offer culturally relevant tools that resonate with ancestral traditions and contemporary experiences. In Black communities, music has historically been intertwined with healing practices. This includes the use of drums, call and response songs, and communal gatherings where music serves as both celebration and healing ritual. During this event, the speakers will explore these themes and demonstrate how music, when combined with modern therapeutic approaches, can offer impactful solutions for mental health challenges, particularly in communities that have historically faced stigma around mental health. Why This Matters: Fostering Diversity, Wellness, and Community Engagement The Global South Arts & Health Week event isn’t just about celebrating music; it’s about fostering an inclusive community dialogue around mental health and wellness. By focusing on Black communities, the event emphasizes the importance of diversity in mental health approaches and the need for culturally informed practices. It also aligns with broader efforts to destigmatize mental health conversations and ensure that individuals feel supported, heard, and seen. This event is not only for mental health professionals or Black communities but for anyone interested in understanding how the arts can be a pathway to healing. Attendees will leave with an enriched understanding of how music transcends mere entertainment, impacting mental well-being in ways that science is only beginning to fully understand. Join Us in this Journey of Cultural Celebration and Mental Wellness This unique session at the University of Aberdeen is an invitation to experience the healing power of music, learn from pioneers in the field, and celebrate the enduring legacy of Black creatives in arts and health. Whether you’re an advocate of mental health, a lover of music, or simply curious about the interplay between culture and wellness, this event offers something for everyone. Together, let’s honor the contributions of Black creatives, explore the transformative potential of music, and advocate for holistic wellness within our communities.
